Although we had his birthday party on Sunday, James officially turned 9 yesterday. Nine! I was hoping to get this posted last night on his birthday, but I just couldn’t find the energy.

After he was born and all of his medical issues became apparent, one of the big questions we had was how long he would survive. None of the doctors could give us an answer, so every year we treat his birthday as a huge milestone. This year was no different.

We try to have a theme for his birthdays, and some years are harder than others. A couple of years ago for his 7th birthday, it was a 007 James Bond theme. Last year the theme was Crazy 8. Earlier this year when Stacy happened to see a simple picture announcing the next installment in the Fast and the Furious movie series, we found our theme. The picture was just Dominick Toretto driving a Dodge Challenger with Letty riding shotgun, and the number 9 above it. Simple, but perfect for a 9th birthday! Sorry Dom, but Stacy put James’ face over yours, so it looks like he’s driving.

Before I share some pictures of the party, I want to thank everyone who joined us to celebrate another milestone for James. Thanks to Icing Smiles–and the baker of course—for another fabulous cake. And thanks to everyone who has supported us in any way over this past year.

Here’s a collage that Stacy put together of all of his birthdays so far. Happy Birthday little dude. Here’s to another year of being awesome!

Oops. I almost forgot about the presents. What’s a birthday without presents? In lieu of gifts, we asked people to bring a toy or book that we could donate to our local children’s hospital, just like we do for Christmas. He did get a few gifts to open and keep, though.
