I hope I don’t jinx it by saying—or writing—this, but James seems a bit different this year. Last year he spent so much time home from school because he was sick. It got to the point that we started to think that he was either allergic to school, or he was just faking it (and doing a very good job of it) so that he could stay home from school. This year it’s almost as if we can’t keep him away from school. After spending four days in the hospital with pneumonia, a few more days at home recovering, we got the sense that he was itching to go back to school.
Although he was ready to go back, we decided to keep him home for a couple of days just to make sure his body was ready. He went back on that Wednesday with an oxygen tank, just in case. He didn’t waste too much time when he got back and jumped right back into getting messy with art projects.
By last Friday he was back at 100%. The pulse ox wouldn’t lie, would it?
The top number in red on the pulse ox is the oxygen saturation of his blood, commonly referred to as “sats”. 100 is the best possible number; that means that his oxygen saturation is at 100%. The bottom number in green on the pulse ox is his heart rate. The number above is about normal for James. When he is upset or not feeling well, his heart rate gets up to 150 beats per minute or higher.
This week he was back to working hard in physical therapy. In the video below he is turning on a light up ball by himself.
And here he is doing an awesome job of holding his head up while watching country music videos on a laptop:
We are extremely proud of how well he is doing in school this year, especially when you consider that he missed most of last year due to illness. Now that we’re getting into fall and the weather is getting cooler, lets hope that we can keep him healthy and in school where he will continue to thrive.
Halloween is only a few days away. Care to guess what James will be this year? Would you like a hint?
Fingers crossed he stays healthy and will be able to celebrate Halloween. I’ll be sure to post pictures of James in his Halloween costume next weekend so be sure to come back for that. Or, if you want to see his costume sooner, I am sure Stacy will post pics on his Facebook page on Thursday.
