Having a disabled, or special needs child, we don’t often have the normal moments that most new parents have. Instead of the bond that mother and child have through breastfeeding, we have a machine that feeds James. We don’t have a baby that cries us awake in the middle of the night; we have a machine that beeps when his oxygen saturations drop too low.

At about 2 am this morning Stacy had what might be the first normal moment with James. She was “on duty” watching over him and he needed a diaper change. As she opened his diaper, he was peeing. She wasn’t quite prepared and by the time she put the diaper back over his “parts”, he had managed to pee all over the sheets and the crib bumper. Oops! It wasn’t the greatest normal moment, but I guess we’ll take what we can get.
