We had a minor setback this week. James started taking Sabril for his infantile spasms about a week and a half ago. The original plan was to start him with 1 package a day for 7 days, and then increase it to 1 package two times a day (1 in the morning and 1 in the evening) for the next 7 days. The first week was not a problem and we started to see a big reduction in infantile spasms within the first couple of days.
We started the morning and evening doses this past Saturday and he seemed to have an adverse reaction to the second dose. He had more spasms and his sats would drop very low. After talking with the neurologist, we decided to go back to taking just a single dose in the morning. We are not positive that it was the second dose that caused the increase in spasms and the drop in sats, but we also don’t think it was a coincidence. We couldn’t identify another trigger. Since we switched James back to the morning dose only, he has not had a recurrence so we are assuming that it was the second dose of Sabril that caused the spasms and drop in sats.
As I mentioned earlier, we started to see a substantial reduction in his infantile spasms within the first two days of starting Sabril…and he was only taking a single dose at the time. So, we are comfortable with keeping him at the single dose throughout the course of the treatment.
