Hooray for us. We successfully made it through Christmas without a trip to the hospital. This past week wasn’t without it’s bumps, though.

The palliative nurse stopped by on Monday (Christmas Eve) for her weekly check on James. She said that James’ lungs sounded a little wet, and he’s a bit congested. Stacy left a message with pulmonology to see what the pulmonologist recommended we do. The doc called back and prescribed a five-day round of steroids, and wanted to make sure we were giving James breathing treatments.

James had a good night’s sleep Monday night…better than the night before. Every day this week he seemed to get just a little bit better. We don’t know if it was the steroids kicking in or what, but he has been off of oxygen since he started taking it. Six days without oxygen. Now that he’s finished the round of steroids, lets see if he can stay off the oxygen.

Stacy and I were joking that we may need to start celebrating Christmas in July since James seems to do much better in the warmer months than in the cold ones. He wasn’t able to spend Christmas with his grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins this year. I did sneak out for a couple of hours on Christmas eve to have dinner at my mom’s while Stacy and James stayed home. Christmas Day Stacy went to see her family for dinner while I stayed home with James. Maybe next year James will be healthy enough that we can all go as a family.

I mentioned in the previous post that we were discussing keeping James home from school until February or March to keep him healthy and away from the germs at school. Stacy has submitted the paperwork to keep James home from school until March 4th. She also spoke with a nursing agency that might be able to come over once a week for a couple of hours to give Stacy a break. This will depend on if insurance will cover it. We had nursing care through insurance a while back, but it was short-lived. Without actually saying it, insurance basically said that we take too good of care of James that we don’t need nursing care. I’m really hoping that insurance will approve it. Stacy is going to need a mental health break.

Thank you all for all the prayers and well wishes. Keep them coming.
