I’ve been trying to stick with the bi-monthly posts, but if things continue to remail uneventful, I may switch it up. We had a couple of notable things happen last week, and absolutely nothing this week. We have a saying in our house… “the calm before the storm.” That simply means that if things are quiet…too quiet…we should brace ourselves for something big to happen. We’re hoping that this quiet, uneventful January isn’t a precursor to a crazy February.

Friday, January 20th was the International Day of Acceptance. We really shouldn’t confine acceptance for just one day. We should accept everybody everyday…no matter the color of their skin, their religion, their gender, their sexuality, or their disability.

Now here’s a little story to warm your heart. One of James’ previous one-on-one school nurses, who was like a second mom to him, sent Stacy a message on Facebook. I have removed names for privacy reasons.

“So last night my son and I went to burger king and we pull off the first thing he says is mommy can I have my toy… So u pulled the toy out and it’s a dog (I believe from the movie pets but totally not sure) and he was missing his back legs and had wheels like a dog wheel chair… He goes mommy, why does he have wheels as legs? And I said well, either he wasn’t born with legs, he can’t walk, or he hurt himself… He goes ooh he’s just like my friend James and I love him! I’m gonna take good care of him mama… Then i walk in the room later to tuck him in… He’s tucking the dog in telling him he loves him and that everythings gonna be alright 😥 I’m so thankful he has been around James and loves everyone just the way they were made… Made me proud actually😑 and it also made me realize we haven’t seen u guys.. We miss u!”

~ James’ former one-on-one nurse

Since the day James was born, we have been asking ourselves why this happened to James or why is James the way he is. I don’t think there is just one reason. Over the years we have found several. It’s been in the donations and support we have received. It’s been in the new student organization at the college that I work at that was started because of James. And it’s been in other people, like the nurse’s son, who have become more aware and accepting of people (and dogs) with disabilities. I’ll be honest. I never expected much from James, but damn it, he’s changing the world and making it a better place!
