After months of anxiety and worry about James starting school, it finally happened. He just finished his first week as a preschooler. We weren’t sure if he was going to make it to the first day, though. He was very snotty and congested on Monday. Since Monday was Labor Day, there wasn’t any school. His first day was going to be Tuesday. Fortunately, he seemed better Tuesday morning so off to school he went. Actually, it was off to school for the three of us. We all went to school for some “1st Day of Pre-K” pictures.
Stacy had permission to stay with James during his first week so that she could work with his one-on-one nurse and the teacher to go over everything they needed to know about James. Stacy said that his teacher is wonderful, and James will have a good year with her. She is also confident that the nurse will be able to handle James.
Stacy didn’t realize how much she missed being in the classroom. Being an elementary special ed teacher before James was born, she enjoyed being back in a classroom. I would love to see her get back into teaching at some point, but James is currently a full-time job. Maybe that will change someday. Or maybe she could find a part-time job at a school while James is in school.
Here is a video that Stacy took of James getting messy with some shaving cream on Thursday:
You may have noticed in the pictures above that James was in a stroller in the above pics. Because of some issues with the company that we’re getting James’ wheelchair through, we don’t have it yet. I mentioned this is a previous post, but long story short, it was supposed to be delivered in the middle of August, but we found out that it hadn’t even been ordered yet. The tech came out on Wednesday to re-measure James and said that we should have the wheelchair in the next few weeks. Let’s hope they don’t screw it up this time and actually put the order in.
We think he had a good first week at school. He’s not verbal, so he can’t tell us how his days are when he gets home, but Stacy said he’s pretty wiped out by the time he gets home. I’m sure it will probably take him a little bit of time to get used to his new schedule.
