James had a rough couple of days, but it looks like he is coming around a bit. On Friday he was very sleepy and slept most of the day. Stacy, being the light sleeper that she is, was awoken at about 1:30 am Saturday morning to the sound of James all gunky through the baby monitor. She got up to clear the secretions out of his nose and mouth, but things took a turn for the worse. His sats dropped and it sounded like he had some secretions stuck in his throat that she just couldn’t get. She put him on a little bit of oxygen to get his sats up and gave him a breathing treatment. She was eventually able to get him stable…or so she thought.

Saturday was much of the same. It started out okay, not great, but manageable. We did some breathing treatments and kept up with the suctioning. Stacy put a call into the pediatrician to let him know what was going on. Based on James’ symptoms, and past history, he thought it might be some sort of infection and prescribed Cefdinir, an antibiotic. He recommended that we either take him to the ER or call home health to have a nurse come out if he takes another turn for the worse. He seemed to be stable-ish yesterday afternoon but ended up making a bad turn last night so we put a call into home heath. When the nurse eventually got there, she listened to his lungs and said that he sounds congested, but she didn’t think it was pneumonia. She recommended we keep up with the suctioning and breathing treatments and if he doesn’t seem to be coming around then we will need to take him to the ER.

This morning he seemed to finally be coming back around. One of our cues that he is starting to feel better is that his spasms come back. When he is sick, he stops having spasms. This morning he was have spasms like crazy! He is off oxygen, sats are in the low- to mid-90s, but still sounds like he has something in his throat. He doesn’t know how to cough so he can’t cough it up on his own. We have a cough assist machine that is supposed to mimic a cough, but that doesn’t seem to be working. We’ll keep working on it. Other than whatever is in his throat James seems to be getting back to normal. Let’s hope he doesn’t decide to make another turn for the worse.
