We took James to see the pediatrician this morning. Whatever illness he started fighting a couple of weeks ago is just not going away. If you read the “It’s Been a Long Few Days” post, you know that he had a several days of respiratory issues and a fever. We did take him to the ER to be checked out on June 30th. They ran several tests, none of which found anything wrong. They gave him a couple of nebulizer treatments (also known as breathing treatments) and eventually thought he was stable enough to send home and didn’t need to spend the night. They gave us a prescription for Cefdinir, an antibiotic, just in case there was some infection that they missed.
For several days after that ER visit James was having respiratory issues and a fever. We were giving him breathing treatments at home and giving him Tylenol to keep the fever down. On July 3rd he seemed to magically return to normal. He was fine on the 4th, but then the breathing issues and fever returned on the 5th. The remainder of the week was about the same…breathing treatments and Tylenol.
Today was the last day of the antibiotic that was prescribed at the hospital and since James still seemed to be fighting something, we took him to see the pediatrician. He prescribed a different antibiotic, Clarithromycin, hoping that it would knock out whatever infection James was fighting. The pediatrician said that if this continues, we will need to schedule an appointment with the ENT (ear, nose and throat doc) as well as the pulmonologist to discuss putting in a trach. This is a discussing we have been avoiding, but if it will make James better, then I think we’ll have to do it.
Here are a couple of pics of James helping with his breathing treatments:
