James is still on a bit of a rollercoaster, but he seems to be getting better. The length of time between his good days and the bad days are longer. Last week he had a pretty good week. Even this week was pretty good. At least until today. I’ll get to that at the end of this post, but before we get to that, let’s do a quick rundown of these past two weeks in James’ life.
Visit with Santa
Back on the 6th we took James to meet Santa. Stacy made James a Christmas shirt for the occasion. She really has a passion for sewing. You can check out some of the other things she makes at her Facebook page.
Seeing Santa put us all in the Christmas mood so that weekend we put up our Christmas decorations. Stacy and I agreed that we need to invest in more decorations. Maybe as it gets closer to Christmas, or in the days after Christmas we can find some good deals on decorations.
A Pending Hospital Stay?
The school sent home a letter from the CDC earlier this week warning about some upper respiratory and strep type thing going around. Great! Because James has respiratory issues already, we decided that we were going to keep him home for a few days to see how it all pans out. He was finally back in school after a long illness, and now we’re pulling him out again.
This morning he woke up congested and sounded like he had something stuck in his throat. His sats were in the 70s and his heartrate was over 200 beats per minute. This is like deja vu. I feel like we’ve been here before. Super Mom to the rescue. She put him on oxygen to bring his sats up, started giving him nebs (breathing treatments), Motrin to reduce his fever, and called the on-call nurse.
The nurse got stuck in traffic and didn’t arrive until early afternoon. By the time she got there James had improved somewhat. His heartrate was below 200, and his sats were back up into the 90s, still on oxygen. The nurse looked him over and called the pediatrician. Based on the nurse’s assessment of James, the pediatrician wanted us to take James to the hospital, but Stacy talked him into letting us try to treat him at home. He reluctantly agreed but wants to see James tomorrow. He prescribed an antibiotic and wants us to keep up with the breathing treatments every four hours and give him extra fluids to keep him hydrated.
Hopefully James will be even better in the morning than he is now, and the doc won’t have him admitted to the hospital when he sees him in the morning.
