James had an appointment with his pediatrician this morning. He got the second doses of these vaccines:

  1. Diphtheria, tetanus, and pertussis (DTaP)
  2. Hepatitis B (HepB)
  3. Pneumococcal (PCV13)

He received the first doses of these vaccines at his first appointment with the pediatrician on November 6th.

2009 CDC Recommended Immunization Schedule

James has been getting breastmilk since he left the NICU, but we’re going to introduce a formula (Similac Alimentum) to see how he handles it. We will start him at 120 oz four times a day for 3 weeks and then bump him up to 130 oz four times a day.

The doc wanted to get some blood work done so after the appointment we went over to hematology at the Children’s Hospital to get a complete blood count (CBC), and a comprehensive metabolic panel (CMP). The CBC counts the red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets. Although this blood test can be used to indicate a number of health issues, the pediatrician just wanted to see if James had any infections. The CMP blood test gives doctors information about the body’s fluid balance, levels of electrolytes like sodium and potassium, and how well the kidneys and liver are working.
Poor James was not happy today!
