School

Last week James learned to be better prepared and more knowledgeable about fire safety and was granted the title of Junior Firefighter.

We got his new school pictures in the mail this week and it looks so much better than the first one. This was the original school photo with his poor ear sticking out:

And this is his new picture:

So much better, right? Stacy already put it up on the wall outside his room. Look how much he has grown.

Birthday Party Featured at Spaceships and Laser Beams

I feel like we’ve hit the big time. James’ birthday party was featured on the Spaceships and Laser Beams blog. Thank you to everyone who made it an awesome party, especially Party with the Warriors.

James Lost his First Tooth

James went to the dentist a few weeks ago and she noted that a few of his teeth were loose. Not loose enough to yank out, but just something to keep an eye on. Because James doesn’t swallow, this was a little concerning for us. What happens if one of his teeth falls out and gets lodged in his throat. He wouldn’t be able to swallow it or cough it up. What do we do then?

The first of the loose teeth fell out earlier this week while he was sleeping. Thankfully he sleeps on his belly, so it was lying on the bed when Stacy went in to get him up.

His first lost tooth

I remember as a kid that the tooth fairy would give me a quarter for each tooth that I lost. Looks like the going rate for a tooth is now $5.

$5 for a tooth?

Okay, so serious question… What do we do with the tooth? Do we keep it, or do we just throw it away?

Health Stuff

Last week we ended up taking him to the pediatrician to get checked out. He had been very sleepy—more than normal—and had some discolored nasal discharge. We think the sleepiness is due to the increase in seizures he’s been having lately. The greenish mucus coming out of his nose was a bit worrisome and usually means he’s fighting something and that’s why we decided to take him to the doctor. The doc said his lungs sounded good but did have a slight wheeze. He prescribed an antibiotic just in case this was the start of something like pneumonia.

We went to see the neurologist on Wednesday to talk about his increase in seizures. He decided to make an adjustment to the VNS. Now, instead of sending a pulse to the brain every 3 minutes, it is now doing it every 2 minutes. We will see if this makes a difference. Stacy took a video of James at the neuro’s office because he just seemed so peaceful, and then he had a seizure just as she was stopping the recording.

James has a video EEG (VEEG) scheduled for December 2nd. We’ll see if things have improved since last time, but it seems like they’re getting worse.

We’re also looking at using this Seizure Tracker app to start keeping track of his seizures.

New Shirts

I am usually the one that goes grocery shopping, and since our grocery store also sells clothes, Stacy asked me to look for new long sleeve shirts for James. I was only planning on buying a couple, but there was a nice selection and ended up coming home with four.

They fit him so nicely.
