Memorial Day

We had family over for a little BBQ on Memorial Day. It was a bit on the warm side so James spent most of the day inside where it was cool and watched some TV with his cousins.

It’s hard to read, but his shirt says, “United States of Awesome”.

School

James had an amazing year at school, but like all good things, it had to come to an end. Our baby is moving on to kindergarten in the fall. Hopefully his one-on-one nurse will be with him next year and his new teacher will be as awesome as the one he has now.

His current teacher and nurse will be with him for summer school so that’s good. We’re not sure yet what will happen with his therapies over the summer, but hopefully he will have something. He’s made so much progress this year that we’d hate to see him lose any of it.

We had no idea that James had to sign in every day he was at school until his notebook came home with him last week. James can’t write on his own, so his nurse helped him sign in. There were a few pages where the nurse wrote some notes if James was doing something while he was signing his notebook. For example, on one of the pages his letters were a bit squiggly and she put a note saying that James was having some tremors as he was signing. You can see this sign in notebook in the video below:

Here are a couple of pics from the past couple of weeks of school.

Our Van Has Been Delivered to Mobility Works

We were informed on Thursday that Mobility Works has received the van that we ordered. They need to go through a quality inspection to make sure everything looks okay before they can deliver it to us. They also need to install the optional jump seat that we ordered for the van. James currently does not have a wheelchair that is suitable for the van, so until that comes, he will continue to use a car seat. This poses a bit of an issue when it comes to wheelchair accessible vans. There are the two front seats (driver and passenger), and a bench seat all the way in the far back. Between the front seats and the back seat is just open floor space for someone in a wheelchair. We obviously can’t put James’ car seat in the front passenger seat and having him all the way in the back wouldn’t work because he needs frequent suctioning, and he would be too far away. This is where the jump seat comes in. The seat will be mounted behind the driver’s seat and can be folded up off to the side when not in use. After he gets a wheelchair that can be used in the van, Stacy or I could use the jump seat to sit next to him when we travel.

Assuming there are no issues with the inspection or installation of the jump seat, they should be delivering the van to our house on Wednesday or Thursday. The Daily Herald newspaper wrote a very nice front-page article about our fundraiser for the van, and wants to do a follow up article. They will be sending out a photographer to take pictures of our van delivery. This is still unreal to us. Friends, family, neighbors, and even complete strangers came together and helped us raise enough money to buy this van. It’s just so incredible. We are very blessed.
