On Friday, October 27th, they had a Trunk or Treat night at James’ school. For those of you who don’t know what Trunk or Treat is, it’s where people decorate the trunks of their cars and hand out candy. Instead of going Trick or Treating to the houses around your neighborhood, you Trunk or Treat to cars around the parking lot.

It was damn cold, so we quickly hustled around the parking lot then went into the school gym to warm up a bit before heading home. Because it was so cold and we’d be wearing coats, we didn’t wear our real costumes. Stacy went as Wonder Woman (because, you know, she is), I just threw on a Batman shirt (although you couldn’t see it with my coat on), and James was Elliot from the movie E.T.

Stacy and James outside at night. Stacy stands behind James in his wheelchair, wearing a red shirt with a large yellow “Wonder Woman” logo, a purple headband, and a black jacket. James is dressed in a red hooded outfit with a black jacket, and a small plush E.T. sits in a wicker basket on his lap. An orange bag with a jack‑o’‑lantern face hangs from the wheelchair handle. The background is dark, with faint lights and silhouettes of people and vehicles, giving the scene a festive nighttime atmosphere.

Now for our real costumes. Stacy likes to get creative with Halloween costumes. An idea pops into her head and then she sets out to figure out how to make it. This year she wanted to dress up like characters from the movie Up. Since James is the star of the family, he was Carl, the main character in the movie. I was Russell, and Stacy was Kevin the bird.

A three‑photo collage shows James in a wheelchair dressed as Carl from the movie “Up,” wearing glasses and a dark greay sweater. The wheelchair is transformed into a cardboard version of the iconic house, complete with a yellow door, windows, and a small sign that reads “Carl & Ellie Forever.” Bright, colorful balloons rise from the back of the chair. In two of the photos, Jeff and Stacy stand beside James in coordinating costumes from the movie: Jeff as Russel, and Stacy as Kevin the bird. The bottom of the collage reads “HALLOWEEN 2017.”

James sits in a wheelchair decorated to look like the house from the movie “Up.” A cardboard structure wraps around the front of the chair, painted with a yellow door and small windows, and a sign on the door reads “Carl & Ellie Forever.” A bunch of colorful balloons is tied to the back of the chair. James wears glasses and a dark gray sweater, completing the costume. They’re positioned in a school hallway with two wooden doors behind them; one has a sign that says “Welcome to Speech and Language,” and the other reads “Wild About Learning.” Another person stands near the second door. The scene feels warm, creative, and full of care.
