Not much news to report yesterday so I didn’t feel the need to post about it. The only thing that happened is they stopped Reglan and Pepcid in preparation for his g-tube and fundoplication surgeries today.
Surgery was scheduled for 11:45 am, but he didn’t go down to the operating room until 1:45 pm. Apparently, it was a bad night and the operating rooms were backed up with other patients. He was supposed to be in surgery for 2 hours, so Stacy and I grabbed a late lunch in the cafeteria and went back to the NICU to wait for James to come back from surgery. And we waited. And we paced. And we waited some more. This was James’ first surgery. Well, first and second surgeries if you count them separately. We were already nervous and worried the night before. He was only 6 weeks old. When he wasn’t back in the NICU by 4:30 we really started to get worried. I started to have all of these thoughts running through my head. “What if something went wrong?” What if his little body couldn’t handle surgery?” “What if __?” We asked the NICU nurse if she could call down to the operating room to find out what was going on. “He is out of surgery and he should be back shortly.” Thank God!!
The surgeon came back with James and said everything went great. What a relief! She said that the incision for the g-tube needs a couple of days to heal and they should be able to use the g-tube on Sunday or Monday.
Since James was still under anesthesia when he got back to the NICU, they tried to do another hearing screening, but it didn’t work too well. They were able to get the preliminary test done and it showed that there is a bit of hearing loss. When they tried the more intense hearing test to see how much hearing loss he has, James started coming out of the anesthesia and started moving. The hearing tech said they could try again another day, but we might have to have his hearing tested after he is out of the hospital, whenever that may be.
Stacy called the NICU tonight before we went to bed to see how James was doing. The nurse said he is doing good. He was a little fussy after his surgery but has calmed down and might have fallen asleep. He will be on morphine for 48 hours and on a ventilator for 24 hours. Sleep tight little man. See you in the morning.
